Can you validate the inputs that produced the recommendation? Trace where the assumptions came from? Understand why the output looks different from last quarter? Provide an audit trail if an investor or regulator asks?
Most agentic deployments today have no satisfying answer to those questions. The output exists. The reasoning chain behind it does not persist in any governable form.
This matters most when the stakes are highest. An agent flags an asset as outside risk tolerance. Without traceable lineage, an analyst cannot determine whether that conclusion came from outdated rent roll data, a conflicting ownership record, or a flawed market comp. The recommendation sits there. The inputs that produced it do not.
Decision lineage is not a model feature. It is infrastructure. It has to be built deliberately, and it has to sit underneath the model for AI output to become something a firm stakes capital on rather than something it hopes is right.
This is the argument that most budget conversations skip past.
As models improve, their ability to reason over high-quality, connected, entity-resolved data improves with them. The ceiling on what good intelligence produces rises. The floor on what poor intelligence produces stays exactly where it is.
